Using Claude and ChatGPT as Stock Analysts

For years, retail investors have been at a disadvantage. Professional analysts had access to research teams, financial models, and countless hours to study companies.

Today, tools like Claude and ChatGPT are changing that.

I do not use AI to tell me which stock to buy. Instead, I use it as a research assistant that helps me understand businesses faster, compare opportunities, and challenge my own assumptions before making long-term investment decisions.

As someone like me, I find AI most valuable when it helps me process information more efficiently rather than replacing investment judgment.

AI is not a financial advisor

The first rule is simple: AI should support your research, not make decisions for you.

Instead of asking:

Which stock should I buy?

I ask questions like:

Compare Microsoft and Google based on:
- Revenue growth
- Profit margins
- Competitive moat
- AI opportunities
- Risks over the next decade

The quality of insights improves dramatically when the question is specific.

Speeding up company research

One of my favorite use cases is understanding a company quickly.

For example, suppose I am researching a company listed on NEPSE such as NABIL, CHCL, SHIVM, or NTC.

Instead of spending hours jumping between reports, I can start with a prompt like:

Act as a stock analyst.
 
Analyze NABIL Bank as a long-term investment.
 
Focus on:
- Business model
- Revenue sources
- Competitive advantages
- Dividend history
- Growth opportunities
- Key risks

The goal is not to blindly trust the output. The goal is to quickly build a research framework before diving into annual reports and financial statements.

This approach helps me identify which companies deserve deeper investigation.

Comparing companies within the same sector

Another area where AI is useful is comparison.

For example, if I am evaluating commercial banks on NEPSE, I might ask:

Compare NABIL, EBL, and SCB.
 
Focus on:
- Earnings growth
- Return on equity
- Dividend consistency
- Digital banking initiatives
- Long-term growth potential

Instead of manually creating comparison tables, I can get an initial summary in minutes and then verify the data from official sources.

Finding risks before investing

One of my favorite prompts is:

Act as a bear investor.
 
Why should I NOT invest in SHIVM Cement for the next 10 years?

Or:

What are the biggest risks facing Nepal Telecom over the next decade?

Sometimes AI highlights concerns around regulation, competition, declining margins, industry disruption, or sector-specific risks that I may have overlooked.

The answer is not always correct, but it often provides a useful starting point for further research.

Building an investment thesis

For long-term investing, I often use AI to stress-test my thinking.

For example:

I believe CHCL is a strong long-term investment because:
- Hydropower demand is growing
- Strong balance sheet
- Consistent profitability
 
Challenge my thesis and identify weaknesses.

This feels like discussing ideas with another investor before committing capital.

The final investment decision remains mine, but the research process becomes much faster.

How I use AI alongside tools like PaisaX

For long-term investing, the goal is not to predict tomorrow's price movement. The goal is to understand businesses well enough to make rational decisions over many years. AI can help with that process, but the responsibility for the decision still belongs to the investor.
